Travel Target * Hallstatt , Austria *
Hallstatt is a village on Lake Hallstatt's western shore in Austria's mountainous Salzkammergut region. Its 16th-century Alpine houses and alleyways are home to cafes and shops. A funicular railway connects to Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake, and to a viewing platform over the lake. To the west, a trail leads to the Echern Valley with its glacial potholes and Waldbachstrub Waterfall.
Peak travel is May–Sep, when the weather's generally mild and rain is common. Lake cruisers run circular trips during this period. On the Christian festival of Corpus Christi (varies May/Jun) there's a procession of boats on Lake Hallstatt. May–Aug also sees open-air classical music concerts in Hallstatt and in an ice cave at nearby Obertraun. Winter (Dec–Mar) is cold, with freezing nights and frequent snow. Snowshoeing is a popular activity at this time.
